Old hardware looking dull and dirty? Before replacing it, clean it up and bring back the shine.
Show me how. Don’t waste my time.
1. Remove the Hardware Remove the handles and pulls from the furniture. Keep the screws together so nothing gets lost.

2. Boil Away the Grime Place the hardware in water and gently boil for about 10–15 minutes to loosen years of built-up dirt and grime.

TIP: For plated, painted, lacquered, or unknown finishes, skip the boiling and soak in hot, soapy water instead.
3. Scrub It Clean Once cool enough to handle, scrub the hardware with dish soap, warm water, and an old toothbrush. Get into the grooves and details where grime likes to hide.

TIP: Still seeing stubborn grime or tarnish? Try one of these simple options.

LEMON: For solid brass or copper, rub stubborn tarnish with a cut lemon. Gently scrub if needed, then rinse thoroughly.

KETCHUP: For solid brass or copper, apply a little ketchup and let it sit for a few minutes. Gently scrub, then rinse well.
QUICK NOTE: Skip ketchup and lemon on painted, plated, lacquered, or intentionally aged finishes. If you’re unsure, stick with soap and water.
4. Rinse, Dry & Polish Rinse the hardware with clean water, dry it completely, then buff with a soft cloth to bring back the shine.

5. Put It Back On Once everything is clean and dry, reinstall the hardware. Done!
